The outstanding qualities of the property and its excellent business record mean Arcadia Lodge is an exciting venture in one of New Zealand's prime tourist destinations.
Arcadia is unique in the Bay of Islands. Perched on its pretty little hill the lodge looks down on tranquil Matauwhi Bay and the comings and goings of the many yachts and boats that use it. Arcadia has been hosting visitors since the 1930's.
It is one of the few properties in the world to be included in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame for being given a five star rating by its guests five years running. This year (2016) the lodge was listed as the 7th most popular BnB in the whole of New Zealand by TripAdvisor.
The Lodge also has a considerable overseas profile, being featured in the usual guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, Fodors, Guide Des Frogs etc but has also been written up in Australia's Dish magazine, the British Observer newspaper and just this March was included by The Guardian UK newspaper as one of the North Islands top ten beachfront hotels and B n B's.
The present owners have renovated Arcadia to a high level mixing antique and contemporary style and modern comfort while retaining the essential character of the house such as the 100 year old, honey-coloured kauri floorboards and many period details.
There are three main bedrooms downstairs, two with light filled sunrooms. All have ensuites and their own decks. There are two smaller rooms upstairs. All but one of the five bedrooms have commanding water views and all look out over a large garden filled with mature natives, fragrant sub tropical exotics and lemon, lime, grapefruit, plum, feijoa and apple trees. Car parks on the same level at the back of the house and at the foot of the garden mean there is never an issue with a lack of space.
A country-style kitchen is at the disposal of guests, to make tea or coffee or help themselves to a bottle of beer or wine from the honesty bar. They can then relax and enjoy their drink watching the ever changing view below from the comfort of the wraparound deck.
The house is tastefully decorated with a mixture of the old and new, period New Zealand and English pieces sit side by side with contemporary art and artifacts picked up overseas on the owners' travels.
